It certainly can be difficult to initiate. I've made a list of people I'd like to talk with—potentially uncomfortable conversations—but mostly because they're old friends whom I haven't connected with in months / years. One a week is my goal.

@Jennifer They certainly do complement each other (online/offline). And with WiFi, both communities can meet in the same place.

So true, I also have a hard time initiating hard conversations but feel so much better once they are behind me. It only gets worse with time so just say what you need to say! Great post.

Absolutely Jason. Although, it is nice to have two coffee communities- locally and online. And coffee does bring us together.

@Jennifer It's great that people connect online, but it's even better when online exchanges go offline, to the coffee shop of course. :) I've made a few friends this way; an email, tweet, etc., and then meet in person. But of course meeting face to face isn't always feasible.

Great points, Jason. We might be connected by the net but how can we connect with each other unless we chat face to face? It's sad we are so absorbed in our own little online world that we don't have time to meet up with friends and the only way to see how they are doing is by checking tweets or status.

Come on people! Drink more coffee together and have a real conversation.

@David Sunnyvale... I lived in Santa Cruz for a few years; not too far away. One living room is never enough. In Seattle (where I now live), there are living rooms on just about every corner. Glad that Starbucks, foo-foo coffee drinks, and laptops offered an escape. When I'm not home or out in the sun, you'll likely find me in a coffee shop too.

This is where my darkbluefan tweet about StarBucks comes in. When my wife and I got too depressed in our 1 bedroom apartment up in Sunnyvale in the Bay Area, we'd escape to StarBucks.
We'd get so much more work done there, hunched over a nice foo-foo drink (e.g. Venti Soy no-water Chai) and our laptops.
Need to work on something together? Ah.. thank you Google Docs.
I digress. StarBucks saved us from depression and we just stuck to the ritual when we moved to SoCal. It's good having about 4 2nd living rooms in the close vicinity.
