Caffeinated Zones of Creativity

By Jason Simon | | Posted in The Act Of Conversation

Upstairs, downstairs, standing up, sitting down, it doesn’t seem to matter. Even with a cup of coffee by my side, I’m still having a difficult time writing about caffeinated zones of creativity. Obviously, I’m not in one; the aroma of coffee isn’t enough.

I can usually write at home with ease, but there are too many distractions right now; dishes to be washed, grass to be mowed, laundry to be folded. My wife has the vacuum inhaling dirt and Izzy needs to be brushed again. Oh, but I should have done that before.

My wife tells me to close the door and get to work, but notes, receipts, forms to be mailed, and folders to be put away are thrown about. And I haven’t checked my email today.

It’s time to put my computer to sleep and recreate my zone, to put my room back in order.

All is put away. Coffee beans from Kona are roasting and The Dave Brubeck Quartet is moving them along. Now that my room is at peace, and I can think clearly once again, it’s time to type. And then off to the coffee shop I will go, to my favorite caffeinated zone of creativity where the buzzing of conversation awakens me even more than caffeine.

This is where my darkbluefan tweet about StarBucks comes in. When my wife and I got too depressed in our 1 bedroom apartment up in Sunnyvale in the Bay Area, we’d escape to StarBucks.
We’d get so much more work done there, hunched over a nice foo-foo drink (e.g. Venti Soy no-water Chai) and our laptops.
Need to work on something together? Ah.. thank you Google Docs.
I digress. StarBucks saved us from depression and we just stuck to the ritual when we moved to SoCal. It’s good having about 4 2nd living rooms in the close vicinity.

@David Sunnyvale… I lived in Santa Cruz for a few years; not too far away. One living room is never enough. In Seattle (where I now live), there are living rooms on just about every corner. Glad that Starbucks, foo-foo coffee drinks, and laptops offered an escape. When I’m not home or out in the sun, you’ll likely find me in a coffee shop too.
