Initiating and creating opportunities for conversation
is what I do. Learn more.
A friend recently told me about a seven year boy who went to the restroom and ran out screaming after someone said hello. His mom taught him not to talk with strangers. If I had children, I wouldn’t want them talking to strangers in this situation either.
After hearing this story, I received a phone call from my dad who described his recent trek to a local coffee shop. After ordering a cup of coffee, he sat down at a table and began watching people come and go. He soon observed a younger man a few tables away, noticing his not so typical reading glasses.
Well, my dad doesn’t have the greatest eyes either, so he introduced himself to the stranger:
One thing lead to another and soon they were sharing a table, talking about their eye issues. My dad plans on meeting his new friend again for coffee and conversation; they only live a few miles away from each other.
A stranger in a restroom is clearly different than a stranger in a coffee shop. One setting is conducive to coffee and conversation while the other not so much. Place matters.
